企業家精神（摘）

1904年，美國《企業家》雜志選用《常識》中的一段話作為發刊詞。此后百余年中滄海桑田，物是人非，但雜志扉頁上的這段話卻從來沒有改變，它被稱為企業家誓言：
I do not choose to be a common person.
It is my right to be uncommon—if I can.
I seek opportunity—not security.
I do not wish to be a kept citizen,
humbled and dulled by having the state look after me.
I want to take the calculated risk,
to dream and to build,
to fail and to succeed.
I refuse to barter incentive for a dole;
I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence;
the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of Utopia.
I will not trade my freedom for beneficence
nor my dignity for a handout.
I will never cower before any master
nor bend to any threat.
It is my heritage to stand erect, proud, and unafraid;
to think and act for myself;
to enjoy the benefit of my creations;
and to face the world boldly
and say:
“This, with God’s help, I have done.”

我是不會選擇做一個普通人的。
如果我能夠做到的話，我有權成為一位不尋常的人。
我尋找機會，但我不尋求安穩，我不希望在國家的照顧下成為一名有保障的國民，那將被人瞧不起而使我感到痛苦不堪。
我要做有意義的冒險。
我要夢想，我要創造，我要失敗，我也要成功。
我拒絕用刺激來換取施舍；
我寧愿向生活挑戰，而不愿過有保證的生活；寧愿要達到目的時的激動，而不愿要烏托邦式毫無生氣的平靜。
我不會拿我的自由與慈善作交易，也不會拿我的尊嚴去與發給乞丐的食物作交易。
我決不會在任何一位大師面前發抖，也不會為任何恐嚇所屈服。
我的天性是挺胸直立，驕傲而無所畏懼。
我勇敢地面對這個世界，自豪地說：
在上帝的幫助下，我已經做到了。
